pilgrimage

A pilgrimage is a journey or search of moral
or spiritual significance. Typically, it is a journey to
a shrine or other location of importance for a
person's beliefs and faith, although sometimes it can be a metaphorical journey into someone's own beliefs. The cycle of works called ’Pilgrimage’ was captured during a pilgrimage to Cz
ęstochowa, one of the most important sites for Polish Catholics.
This strenuous walk is undertaken by a multitude of pilgrims every year. Participants making the arduous journey include ‚veterans’ who may have already walked the route several dozen times as well as infants carried by their parents for the first time. These pictures, however, mostly depict local children, often next to their country cottages within an idyllic Polish village scene. They usually greet and wave pilgrims with the hope of getting sweets in return.
It was a major aim to portray the feelings of childlike joy and light-heartedness. Motley, sickeningly-sweet, blurred and sometimes overexposed photos evoke feelings of collective disconnection from reality. Is it faith that really motivates people to take part in this event? Or is the pilgrimage simply a habit that transports people to their remote longing for childhood?
